I came with 2 friends on the Friday of Labor Day weekend. In the 20 years I lived in Chicagoland, I had never visited, I'm not sure I had even heard of it. Even on a Friday night, we got a table after about 30 minutes of waiting, not too bad, considering seating is so limited. Each table has a little jukebox (non-working) just like an old school diner. I got a sundae with coconut and pistachio ice cream topped with hot caramel, bananas, crushed peanuts, whipped cream, and cherries. Awesome and dang that ice cream melted quickly! Sugar overload, and I don't think I'll need dessert the rest of the week. Reasonable prices too.

Even though I'm a firm believer that ice cream can be enjoyed year round, milkshakes and summer are synonymous for me. Nothing like sipping on a milkshake while walking around with your friends and enjoying the short window of good weather we get in Chicago. Margie's is a classic Chicago establishment with its rich history and old school charm. The wait can drag out, especially during the summer, but trust me when I say the hot fudge is worth it. I usually find whipped cream to be too oily for my liking, but I make an exception for Margie's.

Recently tried Margie's candies after hearing all the hype and I was definitely impressed with the icecream. This store is over a 100 years old. It's right by the western blue line station. It's a bit old school in terms of decor and has very limited seating. You will almost always find a line outside. My friend and I ordered to go due to the large number of people waiting outside to be seated. You have to place your order at the counter and they give you a ticket with the order number which they later call to give you your order. Honestly, the service was a bit chaotic for me. We had to hunt down the server for the menu. There are three line chefs who prepare your order and one of them takes your order, bills you and also announces the order. We felt like he was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of work he had to do. We even saw him making a few orders himself. Maybe balancing the work a bit will help with the chaos inside. With that being said, the icecream is incredible. I love old fashioned icecream and the grandpa's turtle sundae we ordered did total justice. It came with two scoops of vanilla icecream, once with hot fudge and one with caramel sauce. Both scoops were topped with crushed nuts. They also included a chocolate turtle and a vanilla wafer. The server also gave us two extra wafers. Win win, right? I genuinely do think this place needs some work on the decor and the service, but the icecream makes it worthwhile.

Typical chain energy, good ice cream, nice amount of variety but overall simple. It's like the ice cream isn't bad, it's creamy but I have had better. Cutesy ambiance, old timey and kid friendly.
